The Idaho Senate Agriculture Affairs Committee has advanced legislation requiring lab-grown or cell-cultivated protein products to be specifically labeled for sale within the state.  The proposal is sponsored by Meridian Senator Tammy Nichols and Representative Heather Scott from Blanchard.

Senate Bill 1270 would require these products to be clearly labeled using terms such as lab-grown protein, cell-cultivated protein, cell-cultured protein, or alternative animal protein," said Dexton Lake with the Idaho Farm Bureau Federation.  "These disclosures must appear prominently on the front of the packaging using a font size and style equal in prominence to the product name.”

The Label Is Only Part Of The Legislation

Lake added restaurants and other vendors would also be required to clearly notify consumers on menus or through other signage when these products are being offered.

“Just as importantly, the bill prohibits the use of traditional meat cut terms such as steak, roast, brisket, loin, or similar terms commonly associated with conventional raised meat," Lake said.  "The intent is to prevent consumer confusion and ensure buyers fully understand what they are purchasing.”

Under SB1270, the Idaho State Department of Agriculture would be responsible for implementing and enforcing the law with penalties of up to $500 per violation.  Supporters say this will help Idaho align with similar laws already adopted in other states.
