Grazed Grain Crops Program
Producer who have both cattle and grains can use an FSA program to receive a payment if they choose to graze out their grain fields for the livestock.
Washington State Executive Director of the FSA Judy Olson said the program is not often used in the Northwest for a variety of reasons, but can be used by growers who might have a disappointing start to their crop.
“Instead of replanting, they will say, ‘Well, I’ve got a little bit of a stand. It’s not really very good, but I’ve got all these cows out here and I will graze it off.’ This payment option for grazed grain crops allows them to apply for and receive the LDP payment when they’ve already grazed it out.”
Olson said the program is available for hard red wheat growers in the state, but more diversification and better yields than some areas in the country generally means growers often have other options.
For anyone who wants to take advantage of the program, they have until March 31st, but need to talk with the local FSA office.
