Washington State University Extension will host Forest Owners Winter School Saturday at the Water and Environmental Center in Walla Walla.  Joshua Cardin with WSU-Extension said the weekend will be broken into five separate topics directly impacting forest owners.

“We're going to be offering a learning path about Forrest health, which is going to cover invasive insects, bark beetles and root diseases, as well as how to thin and plan on restoration of your forest land," he said.  "We're also going to have a wildlife pathway. We're going to focus on forest wildlife and habitat enhancement.”

Other pathways will focus on:

  • Fire – what to expect before, during and after a wildfire
  • Consulting Forester – teaching landowners how to manage their timber and how to sell to logging companies and mills
  • Technical and Financial Assistance – taught by the Department of Natural Resources

Cardin said whether you attend one section or all, these classes will empower forest owners to take charge and manage their properties.

“The winter's harsh this year, so we might not see as much timber regeneration as you might hope for," Cardin said.  "So, coming of these classes and learning all these skills and valuable lessons might help you landowners keep on track after the winter ends to manage their forests as best possible.”

Cardin noted that each class is about 50 minutes in length, and lunch will be provided.  Registration received by Wednesday February 12th will enjoy a $10 discount.
