Wheat Harvest Underway And Looking Good

The combines are rolling across the Northwest and the 2018 wheat season comes to an end.  Michelle Hennings Executive Director of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers said region wide, 30% of the winter wheat harvest is complete.  Some location have started the spring wheat harvest, but she noted many fields are still too green.  Hennings said the quality of winter wheat is much better in the Northwest than nationwide.

“Looking at right now about 62% of our winter wheat is in good condition, and 23% is excellent and about 14% fair.”

Hennings acknowledged that some locations across the Northwest did not get as much spring rains, so their ratings may not be as high.

“I know there have been some areas that have reported some frost damage, and then there’s been some bumper crops, so it’s kind of fluctuated across the state.”
