USDA Conservation Efforts Must Work For Farmers
Working lands, U.S. farmlands and forests are key to American natural resource conservation efforts.
“Most of the action around climate, smart agriculture and forest really is on the mitigation side," said USDA Under Secretary for Farm Production and Conservation Robert Bonnie. "How can agriculture contribute to efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions even while we maintain our ability to produce food and to remain economically viable?”
Bonnie at the recent Agri-Pulse Ag Outlook Forum in Kansas City said even as growers expand conservation practices as part of their operations, there is need for USDA and all stakeholders in climate smart efforts too recognize that the approach matters. Meaning, one that is voluntary and incentive based, one that conserves resources while providing revenue sources for farm and forest landowners.
“We have to keep folks in business so we can do conservation,” Bonnie added.
