Drought Emergency Covers Every Idaho County
Idaho is under a statewide drought emergency.
On Monday, Mathew Weaver, director of the Idaho Department of Water Resources, issued the declaration for all 44 counties. Governor Brad Little approved the order the same day, making it effective immediately.
Declaration Can Help Idaho's Ag Community, IDWR Says
The emergency declaration gives farmers and other water users more flexibility during the drought. The declaration also allows temporary changes to water rights, including where and how water is used, as long as existing rights aren’t harmed. It may also help qualify users for federal drought assistance.
IDWR says conditions are severe statewide, adding Idaho just saw its second-warmest winter since 1896. Snowpack levels also hit historic lows across much of the state.
Several Basin Reporting Low Water Supplies
According to NRCS, there’s now a 50% chance of irrigation shortages in parts of the Snake and Boise River basins. In addition, several areas across the state are reporting water supplies that are short:
- The Owyhee Basin by 6%
- The Big Lost Basin by 14%,
- The Oakley (Goose Creek) Basin by 44%
- The Big Wood Basin by 53%,
- The Salmon Falls Creek Basin by 58%
Water users interested in temporary changes can apply through the Idaho Department of Water Resources or call (208) 287-4800 for more information.
