Farm Walks Continue Across Washington
As in years past, Washington State University has teamed up with the Tilth Alliance to offer farmers across the Evergreen state the opportunity to learn the latest farming practices up close via the Farm Walks program. For nearly two decades, WSU has coordinated these educational farm walks. The goal, to provide a venue for farmers to learn from one another about organic, sustainable and innovative farm and food business practices. Laura Raymond, with the Washington state Department of Agriculture, said Farm Walks cover a wide variety of topics, allowing multiple commodities to be represented.
“They do tend to focus on practices, but across commodities. So, this year, there’s a focus a little bit more strongly on pasturing and ranch management and meats, in part because of a partnership between Washington State University and WSDA to focus more on the niche meat sector.”
Raymond added growers typically learn best when they get their feet and hands dirty. And she noted the Farm Walks also promote peer-to-peer education.
“There’s certainly something to learn from the host, always, but there’s so much more to learn from each other and to have that opportunity to all be in a place together.”
