WSU Winter Canola Field Tours Set For This week
Washington State University will host a trio of Canola Field Tours this week. The first takes place Tuesday in Odessa, with the final two taking place St. John and Ralston on Wednesday. WSU’s Karen Sowers told the Washington Ag Network these three locations will show growers how canola performs in locations of differing precipitation, as well as other common variables.
“And then another one is crop rotation, you’ve got one that’s in irrigated continuous cropping situation in Odessa, St. John is a three year rotation and Ralston is the driest of the three locations. So, there’s crop rotation differences precipitation differences, soil differences, soil pH differences, so a lot to learn at each location.”
Sowers added growers will also be able to learn how canola can work in their specific operation as a rotation crop, as well as much more.
“Weeds and potentially pests to talk about and even with all of the snow and rain, we’ve had a lot of nutrient leaching out of the root zone so we’re having a lot more. So, we’re seeing a lot more nutrient deficiencies that we can take a look at.”
