It’s been about a month since Washington’s new Distracted Driving Law, also known as the Driving Under the Influence of Electronics Act, went into effect.  Many Washington State Patrol troopers used the first month of the law to educate motorists about the changes as well as what they can and cannot do behind the wheel.  WSP Trooper Chris Thorson said it’s even more important now to put away any handheld gadgets when driving.

“Even our old cell phone law was a primary offense.  So, you can get pulled over for that violation. The first violation is going to be $136.  If you get a second violation within five years it’s going to be $234.”

Trooper Thorson added despite the increased law, Bluetooth devices remain completely legal.   Thorson added collisions due to distracted driving were up 30% last year.
