Washington Wheat Ambassadors Named

At the Tri-State Grain Growers Convention in early November, the Washington Association of wheat Growers handed out scholarships to this year’s Ambassadors.  Lacey Miller of Ritzville and Evan Henning of Thorton were selected to represent the industry at a variety of events throughout the school year, including an advocacy trip to Olympia during the 2019 legislative session.  Miller said while many young people may not be aware of the program, she calls Wheat Ambassadors essential, especially when speaking to the next generation.

“A lot of people don’t really know what goes into farming in general, let alone the wheat industry.  I think appealing to that and showing that the younger generation has interest and can have new ideas and be innovating, but as well as carrying on the tradition, is huge not only for Washington, but across the country.”

Henning said one of the key roles he has as a wheat ambassador is promoting how the latest technology can change how impact the industry.

“The technology to me is impressive, it’s insane how accurate the GPS systems are, how high definition cameras on drones are, how smoothly everything runs now a days, and it’s crazy that a computer can have a mind of its own, still operate a farm and produce the yields.”
