Washington Senate Honors Dairy Industry

Did you know, the first creamery in Washington was established in 1880, nine years before statehood.  On Wednesday, the Senate honored the Evergreen state’s dairy industry in Olympia, during the annual Dairy Day events.  Moses Lake Senator Judy Warnick is a former Dairy Princess who grew up on a central Washington dairy.

“We had 55 cows which was a big dairy at that time, the cows didn’t have numbers, they had names and one of them somehow came with the name Judy, and so I was a little offended by that, but she was a special cow to me.”

The Republican said that was a good time in her life.

“I still have my banner, I still have my crown.”

There are over 6,100 dairy jobs across Washington  In 2016, milk was the #2 commodity in Washington, only behind apples, and was valued at $1.1 billion.
