American beef exports to Taiwan are expected to pass $500 million this year, which would be a record.  The U.S. Meat Export Federation’s Joel Haggard says hitting the ½ billion dollar mark puts Taiwan in with some elite company.

“They join those top tier markets, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Hong Kong, Canada.  Taiwan will join that club.”

Haggard said Taiwan can be used as an example how emerging markets can grow and develop over decades of hard work.  He says in the 1980s, the country primarily imported chilled beef, but thanks to education efforts by USMEF, Taiwanese consumers expect American beef more often at their local restaurants and grocery stores.  Haggard noted that Taiwanese consumers are even feel more comfortable cooking beef in their homes, which has helped evolve the apatite.
