UI Hosting Beef 201 Next Month
The University of Idaho is accepting applications for Beef 201, a follow up to last year’s popular multi-day workshop tailored toward helping the region’s beginning ranchers. Phil Bass, associate professor of meat science, said May’s event follows last year’s Beef 101 hosted in Moscow.
"Really what we're trying to focus on this time around is breeding, genetics, animal health and then we'll talk a little bit of retail meat cuts going forward, but mostly it's on live animal management and good health practices for livestock,” Bass noted. He added they plan on covering a lot of ground in only 2 ½ days.
“If folks do have experience, you're definitely welcome to attend," Bass said. "If you don't have very much ranching experience, that's fine. We do ask that you have some. And have some sort of business where you are raising livestock, and we'd love to have you join.”
Bass said those that participate in Beef 201 will have the opportunity to have soil and forage samples from their operations analyzed. In addition, experts from the meat science team will be able to travel to individual operations and make assessments. Bass added new ranchers may also be paired with experienced mentors in the industry.
