As milk output per cow inches up, herd growth is slowing down. What does this mean for local dairy farmers and the market?

Consumer demand for products like cheese, butter and yogurt that rely on protein and butterfat content continues to drive dairy sales growth in the U.S. and abroad.

The information collected in the survey allows NASS to accurately measure and report conditions and trends in the U.S. milk industry over the course of a year.

While domestic milk production is expected to go up in 2025 and the following year, according to USDA, so is consumer demand.

U.S. dairy exports surged higher in June, reaching 18.7% of domestic milk solids production, the highest level since 2022.

Milk production in the 24 major milk-producing states in June totaled 18.5 billion pounds, up 3.4% year over year. Meanwhile, Northwest numbers were mixed.
