Schulz: Agriculture Vital For Washington State’s Future

Washington State University’s new president Kirk Schulz kicked off a tour of the state Friday to meet with Cougar faculty,alumni and students.  Schulz who comes to WSU from Kansas State University said Washington State has a great history of research for Northwest Growers and he hopes to continue that into the future.

“I’ve got to get to know the ag industry a lot better, like most people in the country I know about the wine industry but the fruit industry the wheat industry and all of those types of things, I want to spend some time with the people doing farming and ranching and find out what kinds of research they need Washington State to be doing to help them be successful.”

Schulz told the Washington Ag Network his experience in the mid-west will be beneficial, but is looking forward to learning more about what makes Northwest Ag unique and special.

“Every state has a little different kind of portfolio in ag production, so I look forward to going on to some vineyards and going out to some wheat farms and really having a chance to learn from the folks out there what we can be doing.”

Schulz made stops in Pullman, Richland and Spokane Friday.  Monday, he’s scheduled to visit Vancouver and Everett.

He won’t start his new role in Pullman until June.
