It should come as no surprise the national spring wheat crop is ahead of schedule when it comes to development. But, as has been the situation for months, USDA Meteorologist, Brad Rippey, said the big story remains the condition of the crop.

"Incredible, just 11% of the crop rated good to excellent and we see 63%, almost two thirds, rated very poor to poor. Washington state: 88% of the spring wheat rated very poor to poor. Also coming in at over 50% are most of the other production states including South Dakota, North Dakota, and Montana at 69% very poor to poor."

Rippey noted there's not a lot of spring wheat to harvest this year, and he added the drought is decimating what crop remains.
