PNW Canola Association Approved in Washington

Early in July, the Washington Secretary of State’s office gave the approval for the creation for the PNW Canola Association.  Washington State University's Karen Sowers says the creation of an Association will benefit growers across the Northwest in two distinct ways.  First, it will give growers the power to lobby, on things such as the Farm Bill, an insurance policy, and more.

“Then the other thing is to be able to generate more research dollars for looking into things that growers are asking us to do, to look into , how can we get better stands established, what is the seeding depth that’s going to work in my region, that sort of thing.”

Sowers said there is still a lot of ground to cover, such as establishing a board of directors, finalizing bylaws and more.  And she added while the process started in Washington, the association will truly benefit the entire Northwest.

“You know, to have this association, we’ll collaborate more across stateliness and at the legislative level, I think is a real bonus.”

Roughly 200,000 acres of canola were planted in the Northwest this year.
