Oregon Increases TIP Rewards
Rewards for information on poachers are increasing, along with the types of illegal fishing offenses that qualify for money or hunter preference points.
"It includes habitat disruption, such as introducing a non-native species,” said Yvonne Shaw, Turn in Poachers campaign coordinator for Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. She said there have been several recent cases of bass or koi released into salmon and trout streams, disrupting the ecosystem.
Last year Shaw noted, the program paid out more than $32,000 in rewards for illegal hunting and fishing.
“Remember, not everyone wants a reward. Many people say, ‘I heard this, I just wanted to let you know.’ We encourage people, if they see something suspicious to go ahead and report it.”
Shaw says State Police rely on those reports. Rewards are funded by the Oregon Hunters Association, Coastal Conservation Association, and the Association of Northwest Steelheaders.
