Winter Wheat production across the Northwest is down 2% from last month.

 

According to the USDA, Washington winter wheat yield is forecast at 65 bushels per acres, down two bushels from the May 1st forecast, and down 13 bushels from the 2016 estimate.  Winter wheat production is forecast at 108 million bushels, down 17% from this time last year.Harvest area, at 1.66 million acres is down 10,000 acres year over year.

 

Oregon winter wheat production is expected to total 40.9 million bushels, up 15% from last year.  Yield is forecast at 58 bushels per acre, down one bushel from the May 1st forecast, but up eight bushels from this time last year.  Area harvested in Oregon is expected to total 705,000 acres, down 5,000 acres from 2016.

 

Meanwhile in Idaho, winter wheat production is forecast at 58 million bushels, down 13% from last year.  Yield is expected to average 84 bushels per acre, down one bushel from last month’s forecast, and down ten bushels from this time last year.  Harvest area is expected to top out at 690,000 acres this year, down 20,000 acres from last year.

 

Nationally, winter wheat production is forecast at 1.25 billion bushels up slightly from the May 1st forecast, but down 25% from this time last year.
