NW Fruit Headed To Hurricane Victims
Nearly 300,000 pounds of Washington apples are on their way to assist people impacted by the recent hurricanes that have struck the southeastern portion of the country. Seven 42,000-pound shipments of apples are being delivered to Georgia, Florida, and North Carolina as part of an effort coordinated by Feeding the Northwest The regional organization working with local agricultural producers to provide fresh produce to those in need.
“What they’ve requested right now is just tree fruit; stuff that’s easy to handle and eat, nothing that really requires cooking right now,” Feeding the Northwest Executive Director Rod Wieber told Capital Press. "That's what those on the ground have requested, tree fruit, stuff that’s easy to handle and eat."
Feeding the Northwest partners with the agricultural community in the region to send fresh produce, like apples, potatoes, onions, and pears, to food banks across the U.S. through the Feeding America network. According to Wieber, the organization receives about seven million pounds of fresh produce monthly, with about one-third staying in the Northwest and the rest going to food banks that typically don't have access to fresh produce.
