The National Potato Council and 26 other leading food and agricultural associations recently sent a letter to Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack expressing concern over what they call the deterioration of the U.S.’s trade with Mexico. NPC Public Relations Director Mark Szymanski said potato growers have been denied market access, corn growers are having genetically modified crops ban and much more.

“It’s obvious that there is a growing list of trade impediments that are being constructed by Mexico intended to either slow or stop U.S. exports.”

The letter asks Vilsack to, “Respectfully urge your attention to this important but quickly deteriorating trade relationship.” Szymanski added obligations for all parties are very clearly spelled out in the USMCA which need to be enforced.

“Blocking U.S. ag trade either through regulation or other impediments is not living up to that agreement and it’s pretty clear that’s what they’re doing.”
