Representative Dan Newhouse is praising the FDA for a proposal that would reclassify almonds, hops, pulse crops and wine grapes.  The proposal which has been in the pipeline for years would exempt those commodities from the Food Safety Modernization Act.  Newhouse said he’s delighted that the agency is applying common sense to FSMA.

“There are just some agricultural products that through the use of those crops, the final use, for example hops, no one sits down and eats a fresh hops salad.  They are used in the production processes that to produce the final product.”

FSMA is applied to ag products that are consumed in their fresh state, such as apple, pears and cherries.  Click Here to read the FDA’s proposal.
