The USDA acreage report released Tuesday revealed a mixed bag for the northwest.


When it comes to winter wheat an estimated 720,000 acres were planted in Idaho, down 10,000 acres from last year. Harvested area is forecast at 670,000 acres, down 1% from 2019. Winter wheat acres planted in Washington came in at an estimated at 1.70 million acres, down 50,000 acres from last year. Harvested area is forecast at 1.65 million acres, down 3% from 2019. In Oregon, winter wheat acres are estimated at 750,000 acres, up 10,000 acres from the previous year.  Acres to be harvested are forecast at 730,000 acres, unchanged from 2019.

Nationally, winter wheat acres planted totaled 30.6 million acres, down 2 percent from last year. Harvested area is expected to total 23.4 million acres, down 4 percent from 2019


When looking at spring wheat, total acres planted in the Northwest Region are up 8% from 2019. Idaho spring wheat planted acres increased from 460,000 acres in 2019 to 530,000 acres in 2020. Washington spring wheat planted area at 520,000 acres, is up 10,000 from 2019.


Acres planted to corn for all purposes in Washington are estimated at 200,000 acres, up 30,000 acres from 2019. Corn harvested for grain acres are forecast at 115,000 acres, up 28% from the previous year.  Corn acres planted for all purposes in Idaho are estimated at 350,000 acres, down 35,000 acres from 2019. Corn harvested for grain area is forecast at 130,000 acres, down 12% from 2019. In Oregon, acres planted to corn for all purposes are estimated at 85,000 acres, up 5,000 acres from 2019.  Acres to be harvested for grain are forecast at 45,000 acres, down 6 percent from the previous year.


When it comes to all hay harvested Washington is expected to report a total of 700,000 acres, up 9% from the previous year.  In Idaho growers are expected to harvest a total 1.30 million acres, unchanged from 2019. In Oregon, all hay harvested area is estimated at 970,000 acres, unchanged from last year.

Potato acres planted in Idaho are estimated at 300,000 acres, down 3% from the previous year. Harvested area, at 299,000 acres, is down 3% from the previous year. In Oregon, growers planted an estimated 45,000 acres of potatoes, unchanged from last year. Harvested area is unchanged from last year. Washington growers planted an estimated 145,000 acres of potatoes, down 12% from the previous year. Harvested area, at 144,000 acres, is down 13% from 2019.

Nationally, area planted to potatoes is estimated at 921,000 acres, down 5% from 2019.
