On Friday, the House joined the Senate by passing the $2.2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security, Act, better known as the CARES Act. The legislation was signed into law by President Trump over the weekend.

Agriculture and rural communities are among the many beneficiaries of the unprecedented legislation. Billions will now go to ensure Farm Bill programs are carried out, while livestock and crop producers, and much or rural America will get needed help in addressing COVID-19.

“Especially clear is just how devastating this crisis is hitting rural communities like those in central Washington," Central Washington’s Dan Newhouse said last week from the floor of the House. "This bill provides desperately needed relief to rural hospitals, many of which are the only health care provider for a great number of my constituents.  It will support the agricultural industry, to ensure hard working farmers and ranchers can continue to provide food security for our nation.”

Newhouse added the CARES Act will provide needed stability for non-Ag businesses across farm country.

“This is a 9/11 moment, a time to put partisan differences aside, policy goals aside, and work together as Americans for the people of our nation.”

The CARES Act also provides additional funding for food stamps, child nutrition, schools, and food banks, hundreds of billions in checks for individuals and families, as well as months of jobless benefits.
