GOP Says Big Beautiful Bill Will Benefit Farmers
Republicans delivered on President Trump request to have the Big Beautiful Bill passed by the 4th of July. Many in the agriculture community said farmers got just what they wanted, or needed, from this legislation, including updated reference prices, improved crop insurance, livestock and trade programs, plus key tax breaks.
“Unleashing a rising tide of prosperity, securing our border, modernizing our national defense and supercharging energy, agriculture, all the sectors of our economy that Washington has kept in a chokehold for too long,” noted House Budget Chair Jodey Arrington
Democrats Say Legislation Will Hurt Millions Of Americans
But Democrats hold a different view. Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries slammed Medicaid and SNAP cuts and the impact on millions of Americans.
“And instead of trying to address that issue, Mr. Speaker, the ‘One Big Ugly Bill’ will rip nutritional benefits away from millions of Americans, including children, rip food away from the mouths of hungry children and hungry veterans and hungry seniors. That is unacceptable.”
Republicans said the bill would save money for the truly needy with work requirements and other reforms.
“USDA has pointed out that there’s about $10 billion a year in waste, just in the SNAP program," said House GOP Leader Steve Scalise. "Fraud, improper payments, not going to children that you hear about on the floor, it’s going to improper payments, to fraud, $10 billion a year.”
Passage Of Bill Could Clear Way For Farm Bill Talks
The tax bill’s passage ends, for now, the SNAP debate that blocked progress on a new Farm Bill and funds updates to help struggling producers deal with the higher input costs and lower commodity prices plaguing them the last few years.
