It’s spring, and that means 4-H and FFA Rural Youth Livestock loans are now available.  The FSA’s Libby Anderson said the loan program has proven popular year after year.  She told the Washington Ag Network they’ve had some children start with the program at ten and continue into early college.

“They’ve been successful repaying these loans, and with an interest rate of 2.625%, which is the current March interest rate, it’s really hard to beat that.  [The loan] takes the pressure off of the family and the parents as far as the financial end of this piece.”

The loans are open to kids, ten to 20 years of age, interested in establishing and operating income producing projects connected with 4-H clubs and FFA.  Anderson said the loans themselves serve as a learning tool.

“This gives the opportunity year after year for kids to do a budget, they’re planning they’re projecting and they have to be responsible for the repayment of the loan, and it shows responsibility all the way around.”

Anderson added loan recipients do not need to live on a working farm to be eligible.  To learn more, contact Libby Anderson, Farm Loan Manager at (509) 754-2463.
