Flags To Be Lowered For WSU Regent
If you see flags lowered at Washington State University buildings across the state Friday and Saturday, it’s in honor of former Regent and alumnus Sam Hunt. Hunt died in April at the age of 83 after more than 50 years of public service as a legislator and civic leader.
Hunt grew up in Seattle and Yakima. After graduating from WSU in 1967, he went on to teach at Pasco High School and was elected to the Pasco City Council. In 1974 he left the Tri-Cities to work for the Washington Superintendent of Public Instruction. He later moved to Washington, D.C.
He was appointed to the WSU Board of Regents in 2024. A new scholarship fund, the Sam Hunt Memorial Scholarship Fund, was established in his honor following his passing.
A memorial service for Hunt is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday at the Student Union Building on the campus of South Puget Sound Community College, and the public is invited to attend.
