A western Oregon meatpacking company that’s been in business for roughly 120 years has closed its two facilities in the Eugene area.  Bartels Packing closed its slaughterhouse and meatpacking operations last week, leading to a 142 layoffs.  Jerome Rosa Executive Director of the Oregon Cattlemen’s Association told the Washington Ag Network this means there is one less buyer in Oregon.

“This will result in lower prices here in the Northwest for our producers, they were processing quite a few head on a daily basis.”

Despite efforts by company officials, a buyer of Bartels backing could not be found in time.

With this closure, Rosa says there are no significant sized meatpacking operations in Oregon.
