Envu recently announced they are making it easier for ranchers to make smarter decisions when it comes to grazing management rotations.  Craig Hossfeld with Envu says producers can now integrate CERES TAG into their RangeView dashboard, enabling more powerful tracking of cattle across range and pasture, herd optimization, and ROI.

"Throughout the day, every six hours, you're going to get a location update on exactly where that animal is at," Hossfeld said.  "But then all throughout the day, there are a bunch of accelerometers and a thermostat in the ear tag that are tracking that animal's movement. And it's able to break down their activity into what they're doing between grazing, walking, resting, ruminating and other. And so, this is really allowing you to see what these animals are doing minute by minute throughout the day.”

Visualize The Data For Each Animal

Hossfeld added from there, based on university research, CERES TAG kicks out a pasture feed intake estimate; how much forage the cattle are taking in and a methane output estimate and more.  The data is then brought into the RangeView platform where ranchers can visualize it by herd or by individual animal.

Hossfeld pointed out that ranchers interested in integrating CERES TAG don’t need to start with the entire herd.

“It's recommended by CERES that you tag somewhere between 10%-30% of your herd, and that's really going to give you good insights to what the herd as a whole is doing.  And I completely agree with that from what I've seen data wise....A lot of producers told me they were going to start with their bulls, make sure that their bulls are doing what they're paying them to do, and get some comfort with it before they move on.”

Future CERES TAGs Will Soon Be Available

Hossfeld added in the coming months, the 6th generation tag will be released, which will have breeding information on it such as mounting scores, calving alerts, and more.  All of which, he pointed out, will be incorporated into RangeView.

Hossfeld added there are other ways ranchers can have these tags pay for themselves in the first year.
