The weather could be dreary across the Columbia Basin this weekend, which means this will be a perfect opportunity to attend the Benton Conservation District’s Small Farms Workshop.  The BCD’s Erin Hightower told the Washington Ag Network this will be an great opportunity for networking and to learn the latest farming management practices for smaller operations.

Hightower said they Saturday’s workshop will focus on three topics:

1.) Fire protection and management,

“We think about fires in June, July and August, when it’s hot and they are on our doorstep, but this is the time of year to manage your property, manage your barns, your shops, for fire protection.”

2.) Legumes.

3.) As well as bee management with the Mid-Columbia Bee Keepers association.

“Most people don’t think it through all of the way, just like livestock, just like any animal there’s disease management you need to consider and health management, and he’s going to touch on that and talk about what you need to consider if you’re going to get bees.”

Saturday’s workshop run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kennewick Library on Union.
