USDA livestock analyst Anthony Fischer noted at last week’s Ag Outlook forum that meat production nationwide is expected to increase in 2026.  The notable exception is beef.

“The cattle herd has been in contraction since 2019," Fischer said.  "Any herd rebuilding will be gradual.  We're looking at tight supplies and ultimately reduced fed cattle marketings, lowering production.  Higher dress weights will add an element of support to production, but ultimately we're looking at a lower number for 2026.”

When it comes to poultry and eggs, Fischer noted things are looking better nationwide.

“Broilers up steadily as production growth is driven by shorter production cycles in favor feed costs," Fischer said.  "Turkey also up from last year. Turkey and eggs are a bit similar in that last year we were looking at supply disruptions due to HPAI. So we're coming off a bit of a weak base year for Turkey. As for eggs, a similar 2025 was marked by HPAI, but production is forecast higher as the laying flock recovers.”
