2016 was a busy year statewide for Washington Agriculture.  The WSDA’s Mike Louisell points out the Department higher a state veterinarian, Dr. Brian Joseph, and assistant state veterinarian, Scott Haskell in the past year.  He added the state adopted the federal Food Safety Modernization Act, or FSMA.  Louisell added in 2016, the WSDA supported efforts to reduce childhood obesity in Washington.

“And provide access to healthy foods in schools, through our farm to school program.  And also some of the lower income families that need assistance through our food assistance program, and this has generated new markets for farmers in the state.”

Louisell said WSDA also managed the disposal of 95,000 pounds of pesticides that owners no longer needed.  On top of that the Department also informed the ag industry of new worker protection standards required by the EPA.  As far as the future is concerned, Louisell said the ag industry will enjoy success in 2017, thanks to a united from between WSDA, the state, WSU and commodity groups.

“Have an understanding of trying to prevent problems, but also to continue to grow the crops that our trading partners both domestic and international are willing to buy from our state.”
