Wildfire Season Could Come Early To The PNW
It’s only the first day of May, but we’re already talking about wildfire season in the southeastern U.S. and Midwest. And USDA meteorologist Brad Rippey said the potential exists for more wildfire events this spring and early summer.
“Pre-monsoon, we are looking at the potential for significant wildfire activity in the southwest in May and June," Rippey said. "And with the low snowpack, that could expose hillsides to more sunshine, more drying. So, I think an early wildfire season for a lot of Northern California and the Northwest, you normally wouldn't see fires until later during the summer, but possibly as early as June this year.”
Rollins Says USDA, Forest Service Will Be Ready
Last week, Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins issued a new Memorandum directing the Forest Service to take various actions in preparation for this wildfire season, including heightened readiness, accelerated community-focused risk reduction, and strengthening firefighter health and safety for the upcoming fire year.
“Under President Trump’s leadership, we have continuously implemented major reforms restoring active forest management, returning the Forest Service to a world‑leading forestry and fire management organization, and modernizing wildfire response and improving coordination across federal agencies," Secretary Rollins said this week. "This fire season we are prepared to continue our full suppression strategy to suppress fire starts quickly to protect our forests and rural communities. This memorandum ensures the entire Department is aligned, prepared and focused on responding quickly and effectively to protect communities and the natural resources Americans depend on. Proper forest management remains central to this effort – reducing wildfire risk, strengthening rural economies, providing affordable, high‑quality lumber for American homes, and preserving the nation’s landscapes for generations to come.”
