The USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service surveys could feel like a burden, particularly if farmers didn’t have a good year.

But the ag industry organizations believe this information is important, according to Wesley Spurlock of the National Corn Growers Association.

“If you’re looking at the new farm programs, the formulas are set up and the NASS data is really what makes these formulas work right.”

The data can also go out to businesses that don’t farm but are tied to agriculture.

Kelly Bray with CropLife America said they need this data to understand what’s truly going on.

“We so greatly value the work that NASS does in collecting information from farmers not only on the production side but for crop protection use as well. How products are used and when and where, that’s valuable data.”

Bray said the numbers show what is really happening out in the farmlands throughout the country.
