USDA Makes Changes to MPP
The USDA is updating the Dairy Margin Protection Program to allow dairy farms the ability to update production history when an eligible family member joins the operation.
USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack said the change, “not only helps to strengthen a family dairy operation, it also helps new dairy farmers get started in the family business, while ensuring that safety net coverage remains available for these growing farms.”
The change was greeted with appreciation from the National Milk Producers Federation with President and CEO Jim Mulhern saying the changes will improve the program while still calling for MPP to evolve more.
The new rules go into effect today, April 13th.
