Government Shutdown Impacted The First Apple Report Of The Season
According to USApple the first report of fresh and processing apples in storage is incomplete, thanks to the government shutdown.
As of November 1st, 127.5 million bushels of fresh apples were in storage nationwide, which is off from the 130.4 million bushels reported this time last year; but still ahead of the five-year average. When it comes to apples for processing, 42.8 million bushels were in storage to start the month, which is slightly larger than both last year’s figures and the five-year average.
USApple noted total comparable apple holdings cannot be reported, due to the federal government shutdown, which prevented Michigan from being able to estimate the state’s holdings. USApple said a revised report would be issued once Michigan’s numbers are available.
When it comes to Northwest numbers, Washington’s crop accounts for 115 million bushels of fresh, and nearly 39 million bushels for processing. Oregon reported 545,000 bushels of fresh apples, and 275,000 bushels for processing. And in Idaho, 350,000 bushels are earmarked for fresh, while 32,000 bushels will go to the processors.
