Earlier this spring, the University of Idaho announced plans to build a new meat science and innovation center that will house Vandal Brand Meats on the Moscow campus.  The new facility will replace the existing, out of date structure on the west side of the campus, allowing for teaching, research as well as retail sales.

Michael Parrella, dean of the U of I’s College of Agriculture says this expansion will benefit the school as well as the state.  He noted animal agriculture makes up about 60%-70% of the total state Ag economy.

“We have a very important livestock industry, we have the Idaho cattlemen’s association, Idaho beef council, a lot of meat processing going on.  It seemed logical that we’re trying to expand this program, train more students, and try to develop a national reputation.”

Agri Beef, one of Idaho’s best known integrated meat processors, committed $2 million to the project, but Parrella said they have a long way to go before the new facility is paid for an construction can begin.

“The facility as designed is an $8 million facility, so basically with the lead gift from Agri Beef, and then Northwest Farm Credit Services, and then the College internally, we’re going to be putting some money in.”

Parrella noted the new facility will capitalize on a highly visible location to expand the public’s ability to buy products and learn about the college’s meat science program.
