Syngenta is out with a new AgriPro wheat seed variety that company officials say will help with consistent performance. In early-September, Syngenta announced AP Venom, an AgriPro brand hard Red Spring Wheat that has been tested for both spring and falling plantings.

Riley Hille with AgriPro said AP Venom is an excellent example of the top-performing wheat varieties growers have come to expect. She added it may not be as flashy as other varieties, but AP Venom produces great yields.

“That fall planted DNS market has kind of been over looked in this area, and we haven’t seen a lot of new varieties or a lot of varieties that bring a lot to the table in the last couple of years, and so I really think [AP] Venom is going to be something that’s different and newer to the growers, and they haven’t gotten to see that in a couple of years now.”

Hille noted, as a farmer’s wife herself, she understands that it is bushels that pays the bills. And AP Venom, she said, out yields the competition.

“So, you’re getting the yield there, it’s got goo proteins, you do have to manage the protein a little bit, it’s not going to be one of the varieties that hits 15.5%, but 13.8%, 14.0% with proper nitrogen application, it does really well.  So, from an economic standpoint it’s a variety that pays.”

Hille noted that AP Venom is a pretty easy variety to grow, and while it gets a little tall it has good standability. She added it has good stripe rust resistance, meaning growers won’t need to address many disease pressures.
