According to the Washington Grain Commission, the state’s wheat harvest is largely complete, with yields generally above average despite localized frost and limited spring rainfall.  Many farms reported yields 20%-30% above average, though results ranged from 25 bushels an acre in dry, frost-affected areas to as high as 140 where June rains helped.  Generally speaking, Spring Wheat yields were weaker.

The Commission added protein remains a concern, ranging from 8%-11%, with the average running around 9%.  Recent showers improved fall seeding conditions, but also caused soil crusting as well as some winter-wheat replanting.  The Commission noted the moisture has also encouraged weeds that will require fall control.
