The spring wheat crop appears to be progressing nicely nationwide.   With planting wrapped up for the 2025 season, the industry can now look at emergence numbers.

“82% of the crop emerged by June 8th, one point ahead of average, four points behind last year's 86%," said USDA Meteorologist Brad Rippey.  "The crop is fully emerged now in Minnesota, South Dakota and Washington. But we are seeing some delays in emergence due to drought in Montana at just 63% emerged. The five-year average there is 87%."

Rippey added emergence is not the only concern for the Treasure State.

“Speaking of drought that is pulling the condition down in some areas notably, Montana." Rippey said.  "Overall, just 53% of the spring wheat rated good to excellent, 9% very poor to poor. And while that does represent an improvement from last week when we were at 50% good to excellent and 13% very poor to poor, there are concerns Montana wheat currently rated 26% poor, none of it very poor.  And I do want to point out last year at this time, much better rated spring wheat crop was 72% good to excellent and just 3% very poor to poor.”
