Winter wheat harvest is running ahead of schedule this year — but the quality story is a lot more complicated depending on where you look on the map.

When it comes to the quality of this year’s winter wheat crop, only 27% of the crop is considered good to excellent. The Northwest is reporting much higher numbers.

It’s a tough season for winter wheat across much of the country, with several states seeing alarming declines in crop quality this year.

Winter wheat conditions nationwide have growers concerned about crop development. Nationally, growers reported a decline in the crop's condition. But growers across Idaho, Oregon and Washington are reporting very good numbers.

U.S. Wheat Associates recently released its annual Crop Quality Report, bringing together producers, researchers, and industry professionals before taking the findings on a global tour to meet directly with customers.

In Idaho 60% of the Spring Wheat crop is rated good to excellent, while in Washington, 56% is rated good to excellent
