Needs Of Dryland Growers Addressed At OSU/ARS Field Day
Wheat and dryland growers from the Columbia Basin, and across the state of Oregon were in Adams, OR Tuesday for the Oregon State University/ARS Field Day. Francisco Calderon, Columbia Basin Agricultural Research Center Director, noted a majority of the questions they address during this annual field days come from stakeholders.
“They want to know what's the best way to apply certain fertilizer, how different crop rotations work, how can we control hard to kill weeds and these things. And beyond that, we have a very popular wheat cereal variety testing program that goes through the whole state. It has a footprint from California to Washington, so we truly serve statewide needs.”
It's Not Just Growers that benefit from Field Days
“The OSU faculty here at Pendleton benefit from interacting with the Soil Science and Botany and Plant Pathology departments in Corvallis, and they benefit from having us here in Ground Zero, where all the agriculture is happening.”
Research Center Is Here To Help Growers Year Round
Calderon added the CBARC is a one stop shop for most of the needs that dryland growers could have.
“Everything from agronomy, soil fertility, microbiology, plant diseases, etcetera. We have expertise here and we have a long track record of publications that we can refer to to answer questions.”
For growers that missed Tuesday’s field day, OSU will hold another field day Wednesday, June 11th, at the Sherman County station, located at 66365 Lonerock Rd, Condon, OR 97823 . Click Here for details.
