OSU Research Focuses On Tillage Fallow And Weed Management

Researchers at Oregon State University’s Columbia Basin Ag Research Center outside of Pendleton have been looking at weed responses to fallow management of winter wheat.  The four-year study found that reduced tillage fallow, which is an alternative to summer fallow, could improve weed management.

“It seems that the weeds were more competitive after the fallows that they were just controlling weeds with tillage and practicing a more reduced tillage follow,” said OSU researcher Judit Barroso.

The research indicates tillage fallow, which leaves about 30% or less of the previous crop’s residue in the field, could help winter wheat here in the Northwest, specifically when looking at problematic species of grasses.  Click Here for the complete study check.

While the commission had no role in the research, data collection or analysis, Barroso said the Oregon Wheat Commission partly funded their research work.
