Oregon Kate Brown has declared September 11th through the 17th as Organically Grown in Oregon week.

Oregon Department of Agriculture Director Katy Coba said she is excited to put the focus on organic since it is growing so fast.

“Certainly, on the consumer side, there is a lot of demand for organic and we’ve seen that reflected in the amount of organic products available in grocery stores around the state, on menus, you name it.”

Oregon has the eighth most organic farms and is fourth in organic sales in the U.S.

Coba said she is often asked about organic food and the growing process on visits overseas.

“I think the take home message for Oregonians about organic agriculture is it is a vibrant part of Oregon agriculture. We are one of the top states producing organic agriculture in the United States. It’s really, really nice to have a week that we can celebrate that success story.”

Coba said she has seen many farms that have dedicated at least a portion of their fields to organic crops and that their return on investment is very good.
