National Farmers Union members are extremely disappointed with President Donald Trump’s proposed budget calling for a $4.7 billion cut to the USDA’s budget.  NFU President Roger Johnson says the sting is especially deep since crop and livestock prices and farm incomes are all 50% of what they were three years ago.

“It’s a good thing that it’s congress that writes the budget and not the President, because this seems to be a president who is out of touch with what’s going on in agriculture right now.  There are a lot of family farms that are facing significant financial challenges right now.”

Johnson added the President’s budget plan would significantly cut the farm safety net and cause a lot of damage to American agriculture.  Trump’s budget cuts discretionary USDA programs while leaving SNAP intact, which is included under mandatory spending.
