National and Northwest hay prices enjoyed a modest increase over the past year.  According to NASS, the all hay prices increased $24 from August 2017 to August this year.  The new price sits at $161 per ton.  The Other Hay category, which covers hay other than alfalfa, was up $13 year over year, sitting at $130 per ton.  The highest alfalfa price recorded this year occurred in May at $189 per ton.

 

As far as the Northwest is concerned, Washington alfalfa prices increased $20 from 2017, to $175 per ton, Oregon’s rate increased $20 per ton to $200, and Idaho’s price for alfalfa hay increased $10 to $140 per ton.  All hay prices showed similar increased across the Northwest, with the exception of Washington, which only saw that category increase $3 per ton in the past year.

 

The highest average Alfalfa Hay across the county were:

  • New Mexico at $240 per ton
  • Kentucky at $220 per ton
  • Arizona at $220 per ton
  • Colorado at $215 per ton
  • Oregon at $200 per ton
  • Texas at $198 per ton
  • California at $195 per ton
