Custom Harvesters Helping Growers Finish The Season Strong
The season hasn’t yet started, but it’s never to early to start planning for harvest, making sure you have the equipment and bodies you need. That’s where U.S. Custom Harvesters looks to help.
The organization is made up of people nationwide who harvest crops, both grain and forage, for an individual farmer or business. Paul Paplow, President of U.S. Custom Harvesters said when a farmer doesn’t have the time, or is unable to invest in large equipment, that person can turn to the services of USCHI.
“Farmers can reach out to us if they need a harvester for any aspect. If they call into the office, Mandy will send out mass emails, and they can specifically say what they want for equipment," Paplow said. "And if our members have that, they will reach out to you and they can bid the job and see if they can make something work with you.”
Promoting Farming In D.C.
In addition to harvesting crops, U.S. Custom Harvesters is advocating in Washington D.C. for the industry. Top issue, Paplow pointed out are H-2A/immigration reform as well as K exemption for CDLs.
“As a custom harvester, if you're a member of the U.S. custom harvesters, you qualify for the K exemption, so you can have an 18-year-old driver with a CDL that can cross state lines," he said. "That's one thing that we've got to stay on top of. We have a five-year extension. It just got renewed this year, so we're good for another five years.”
