National Farmers Union Holding Convention In Bellevue
The National Farmers Union will hold its 117th Anniversary Convention March 3rd - 5th in Bellevue. Patty Edelburg, NFU Vice President, said they selected western Washington, because the organization had not been in the Northwest for several years, and they also wanted to focus on growing membership in Washington.
She added during the Convention the will not only work on policy, and topics to address in D.C. in 2019, but also issues like tax code changes, extreme consolidation in the Ag sector and climate change. Whether it’s flooding, drought, or massive amounts of snow, Edelburg says climate change is impacting Ag.
“So, our biggest thing is trying to educate some of our farmers to give them best practices to use, educating not only farmers but also Administrations to realize the impact that climate change is having on farmers.”
Edelburg said in addition to the educational breakout session, the event allows farmers to learn more about the NFU and how they benefits mom and pop organizations. She said NFU fights for family farmers.
“Trying to keep family farmers on the land, trying to do some education, for farmers and different aspects of agriculture. Just about every aspect of agriculture, we’re a huge large tent organization, we’re not specifically for dairy, we’re not specifically for grains, we try to do a lot of work for everybody.”
