Idaho Taking To The Air To Fight Invasive Weeds
Low-level helicopter flights spraying herbicide in the Hayden Creek drainage of Idaho Fish and Game Unit 29 (south of Salmon) got underway Monday. The Salmon-Challis National Forest, Bureau of Land Management and Idaho Fish and Game are treating more than 24,000 acres burned by the Hayden Fire in 2023.
According to IFG, the goal is to slow the spread of invasive cheatgrass and noxious weeds, reduce future wildfire risk and help native plants recover in important deer and elk habitat. Officials say fall is the most effective time to treat cheatgrass, though the work may temporarily affect hunters and other recreationists.
