Plate Honoring Idaho Potatoes Available Starting July 1st
They say there’s no school like the old school, and that will be very true at Idaho DMV offices starting next month. During the most recent legislative session, Idaho Governor Brad Little signed House Bill 204 creating a new license plate design honoring the state’s potato industry. Jamey Higham, Executive Director of the Idaho Potato Commission, said it’s not really a new plate.
“It's kind of a throwback to one that was around in the 50s. And you see it a lot in other states around. It's an all black plate and ours is going to say, “Idaho” on top and “World Famous Potatoes” on the bottom. Then it's all black with the white lettering and it's it looks pretty cool.”
Higham added that’s not the only place where spuds will be honored on this retro-style plate.
“Let's say the number you get is 112, it was the 112th plate made, it would say “112 FP”, and FP stands for famous potatoes. So, all those plates, unless it's a personalized one that says, you know, "potatoes are great" or whatever, it'll let the numbered ones will end in FP for famous potatoes. And I think it's going to be pretty popular.”
The black license plate will cost $70 plus regular registration fees; the Idaho Potato Commission will receive $25 from that. Going forward, renewing the black license plate will cost $50, with $15 going to the commission.
